Masterclass delivered by Gérard Schiphorst and Marije van der Sande from
WHERE / WHEN
18–20 September, 10:00 am–5:00 pm
Klaipeda Puppet Theatre
Workshop is organised by Lithuanian National UNIMA Centre
During this workshop the participants will learn to make a wordless visual performance starting from found objects, they will get to know how to use objects and materials to find drama and content for a performance about objects: from looking at the talents of objects and bringing them alive to writing a visual scenario and making a small or large performance.
On the first day, all participants will have to bring objects from a list sent to them. After an initial presentation on the object theatre we’ll start looking at what participants have brought. We are going to see what the talents of these objects are, what they tell us that could be used in a story, what associations these objects bring.
During the second day, we are going to find drama inside each object and a proper place for them in a narrative in order to make them work in drama. We will also learn how to manipulate them to make the audience believe in them as characters and to make them stand out in the role they have in the narrative. We are going to combine what the participants want to tell with the talents of the objects. We will explore the fundamentals of writing a scenario for visual theatre.
During the third day, the participants will be making small performances up to 5–10 minutes. This will be done in groups. During this process a lot of hints and comments are given on occurring situations and problems, so that everyone can learn from it. After some time the performances are ready to be shown and will be performed for the whole group. Everyone can comment and the participants have some time to improve the small pieces. At the end of the day, developed performances will be presented for real audience.
